The survivors have speculated for years that the battle went unpublicized so long due in part to the well-known shortcomings in base security that had left it vulnerable. Gene Pugh, who was a communications operator, recalled that he took in CIA messages Aug. 19 and 20 that warned of imminent ground attack. It was only a few years ago that he and Bill Barclay compared notes, and they discovered that Barclay took in the same message Aug. 22, just hours before the attack. But the base commander never acted on the warnings, they said.

Wu notes that he made a trip earlier this year to study roll-packing products in the United States. “Can you roll pack springs? The answer is yes,” he says.

"We do box pours in the U.S., which makes us very customizable," he said. "If the customer wants a tweak here, an additive there, we can do it without having to fire up a huge slabstock line. Also, it’s good from an R&D perspective. We don’t have to pour 50 feet of foam to find out it didn’t behave how we thought it would."

Lobkowicz added that the dissatisfaction that mattress buyers felt when choosing a new mattress traditionally opened the door to bed-in-a-box firms.

Don’t assume firm mattresses are automatically better for bad backs and older people – that’s a myth (see the link below). And remember that if you and your partner have different preferences, you can get mattresses where each half has a different tension (with or without a zip).

Check the warranty, not only for the number of years it lasts, but also for the fine print. Most warranties cover manufacturing defects, which will probably happen quite quickly – for example, a popped spring, or foam not bouncing back. But if something happens and you haven’t used the recommended bed base or have failed to use a mattress protector when they insist you need one, the warranty could be invalid.
